Insect-O-Cutor flycontrol units stand out thanks to their design and state-of-the-art technology. They attract insects with UV light and can be used for a variety of possible applications. Electric killing grid flykillers such as the popular “Allure” model cover a large area and can be used in commercial, industrial and warehouse situations. Kitchens for example need a high level of hygiene and sanitation, meaning insect traps with special glueboards like the “Edge” are the best choice. Decorative flykillers with a hidden catch tray are a discreet solution in front-of-house and spaces with a lot of customer traffic. In the picture you can see the “Aura” glueboard flykiller for restaurants and cafés.

Company history

The Pelsis Ltd headquarter is based in Knaresborough, UK. The company was founded in 1984 by Peter Hicks who sold flykillers with electric killing grid under the brand name Insectaflash. The initials P + L stand for the initial of founder Peter and his wife, Lynne. Several brands became part of the company over the years. In 2009 P + L Systems took over the brand Insect-O-Cutor, a UK business producing insect control devices since 1962. In 2014 P + L Systems was renamed Pelsis.

Current Pelsis CEO Peter Mangion later said: "We certainly view pest control as our strategic business area and are constantly seeking new, non-competitive businesses of the right quality to add to our existing portfolio."

Pole position

In 2006 Peter Mangion (Twitter: @mangion44) became the managing director of the Pelsis group. He was born in 1961 in Taplow, near London and had been working in consumer marketing for brands such as Wilkinson Sword and Henkel. The Pelsis CEO is also involved in strategic planning. His first acts were the structuring of the product portfolio and changing pricing from “cheap and cheerful” to “Design and Quality”. According to the Yorkshire Post the company achieved a growth in sales from 9 million to 90 million within the first ten years under Mangion’s leadership.

A personal interest of Peter Mangion is fast cars. If he has time he takes part in races such as the Carrera Cup Great Britain. His favourite Porsche race car is the 1998 911 GT1. In June 2018 during the second race in Oulton Park he won first place in his category. It goes without saying that his car and protective clothing is decorated with the Pelsis logo. Posing proudly on the podium also makes for excellent advertising.

There seems to be a general fondness for cars in the company. Trade paper pestmagazine.co.uk reported in 2012 that the salesperson of the month receives unlimited access to a Mini Cooper from the business fleet. Managers used the letters FLY in the number plate and even put the pedal to the metal during the Great Knaresborough Bed Race, an exciting spectacle for a good cause.

Recent developments

In April 2012 P + L Systems moves into the current headquarters in Knaresborough with a storage area of more than 2,700 m2 and office space of about 1,400 m2. Back then roughly one third of the storage and office space remained unused which soon changed thanks to growing global expension.

For years now Pelsis has been a leading B2B company on the market for pest control and facility management. Their customer base includes pest exterminators, retailers and global distributors. Individuals as well as small-scale enterprises can shop Pelsis products in our creoven online store.

Customer relations

What made Pelsis such a strong and booming brand always has been (and continues to be) direct contact to pest-control companies. This principle has been part since the beginning of of P+L Systems. That enterprise hired economics graduates all over the world. Thanks to their language skills they opened up international markets for P+L. France, Germany and Spain were the first countries to be “conquered” by the British firm. Today, Pelsis proudly looks upon 11 facilities in Europe, Asia and the US with customers from more than 80 countries and more than 270 employees around the globe.

Pelsis offers technical support in more than 14 languages to facilitate communication for customers. Apart from European languages there are Chinese and Russian native speakers. As pestmagazine.co.uk remarks in October 2012, this is not a matter of course in North Yorkshire.

Pelsis Academy in Knaresborough

Even today the direct contact with users is of great importance to Pelsis. Their training centre Pelsis Academy was opened in November 2015 in the presence of British associations for pest control. The Academy trains employees, customers and representatives of the market in new products and techniques of the industry. On top of events in Knaresborough more training is offered in other regions of the country that are frequently visited by participants from other countries as well. CEO Peter Mangion says that learning and development are a crucial point in the business.

virtual tour shows premises of more than 4,000 m2 with a modern and colourful interior reminiscent of Google offices. Architects Barrett + Barrett were tasked with the mission to bring joy and fun into the rather dry transfer of knowledge. An open kitchen with snacks, table football and recreational activities were successfully implemented for visitors.

On the wall Pelsis company values are clearly visible for everyone: Quality, Innovation and Community. Even replicas of rodents, birds and insects were added. Humorous drawings show flies playing Golf or doing yoga. Naturally, decorative flykillers by Insect-O-Cutor and P + L Systems washroom accessories can be found in the training centre.

The highlight is a two-storey, life-sized house above the warehouse. Here visitors can apply their theoretical knowledge in real life. Participants of the training courses look for indicators of pest infestation and discuss their individual approach with the instructors.

Operation and placement of electric flykillers

Electric units with UV tubes imitate the wavelength of natural sunlight to attract insects. They land on a killing grid, glueboard or in a collecting tray. To ensure maximum efficiency UV tubes should be replaced every 12 months. The recommended effective life of glueboards is about a month. It might be necessary to replace them even sooner in case of an increased number of insects, dry air or excessive dust.

The best spot for electric insect traps needs to be determined individually. If possible, install the device between the entry lane of the insects and the area you want to protect. Keep in mind that air stream caused by radiators, fans and air conditioning systems impacts the insects’ flight.

If possible, units should be mounted 2 metres away from the ground, ideally at a 90° angle to natural light sources. Ensure distance to other sources of light and heat as well as windows and doors. The devices should be easily accessible for maintenance, cleaning, replacing parts.

In areas that call for high standards of cleanliness and hygiene such as food production only units with glueboards should be used. Depending on the room size multiple traps might have to be used to cover the entire space.
